Understanding Arizona Adoption Laws
We help foster parents, step-parents, and private individuals and couples who wish to adopt in Arizona. Every family is unique and we’re here to support their diverse needs. Our extensive legal experience includes representing the Arizona Department of Child Safety in dependency, guardianship, termination of parental rights, and adoption matters. We’ve built our practice in helping our clients reach outcomes that respect and uphold their best interests.
Who is eligible to adopt in Arizona?
Any adult resident of Arizona may file a Petition to Adopt either individually or jointly. If the child(ren) is a dependent of the Arizona Juvenile Court, an adult resident of another state may seek to file their petition in Arizona.
Do I need to be Certified by the Court?
To be Certified by the Court, the process includes a written application, attending adoption orientation and training, passing a criminal history and child abuse background check, and verification of financial and emotional support for the child. However, current licensed foster parents, first relatives (adult sibling, aunt/uncle, or grandparent), or the spouse of a parent of the child do not need to be Certified by the Court.
How much does it cost to adopt a child in AZ?
It depends. It’s best to consult with an adoption attorney who can help you navigate the process and set realistic expectations of what costs may be. Contact our office today to determine whether your case qualifies for adoption subsidy.
